Sexual Health Q & A

What is sexual health?

Your sexual health involves your mental and physical comfort around sex and your sexual function. It can fluctuate over time depending on your circumstances and the natural changes that happen to your body as you age.

Several types of sexual dysfunction can happen; any type can impact your intimate relationships and self-esteem. Fortunately, hormone replacement therapy is an effective treatment for many people who experience these issues.

During your consultation at the Center for Youthful Aging, Dr. Arne asks about your concerns related to your sexual health. He can then recommend the appropriate approach for hormone replacement therapy using bioidentical hormones.

What are some problems that can affect my sexual health?

Sexual health for men and women is different. The symptoms you experience related to sexual dysfunction depend on your sex:

Sexual dysfunction in women

Sexual dysfunction can happen to you after childbirth or menopause or because of other significant life changes. As the tissues in your vagina get thinner and weaker, you may begin to experience vaginal dryness, vaginal laxity, and pain during sex. You might also have a low sex drive.

Sexual dysfunction in men

Men who experience sexual dysfunction often do so because of aging or low testosterone, but other factors can also contribute. Some of the most common symptoms are low libido, erectile dysfunction, and inability to orgasm.

How can I restore my sexual health?

Restoring your sexual health is possible, often through bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). BHRT for men involves taking testosterone, while BHRT for women involves taking estrogen. Both types of BHRT restore a balance among your sex hormones if they’re low.

When you go through BHRT at the Center for Youthful Aging, you can expect to use hormone pellets. Dr. Arne implants a pellet under your skin, gradually releasing hormones at a steady rate. This eliminates the fluctuations between doses when you take hormones in pill or injection forms.

Typically, it takes 4-6 weeks with a pellet to experience improvements for your sexual dysfunction and any other symptoms you have from a hormone imbalance.
